Methodist Justice Ministry

Rev. Brooks Harrington, an Associate Minister on our staff and a licensed attorney for the last thirty years, coordinates the Methodist Justice Ministry. The ministry provides free legal advice and representation to people whose incomes are at 125% or less of federal poverty guidelines. He also attempts to establish a pastoral relationship with the clients he advises and represents.

The Methodist Justice Ministry, formed in 2006, is a Texas non-profit corporation wholly owned by First United Methodist Church of Fort Worth, a 501(c)(3) tax exempt organization, and a part of the Texas Lawyers Help Division of the State Bar of Texas. Its legal malpractice insurance is provided by the State Bar. In more than 90% of the cases presently in suit, the Methodist Justice Ministry is representing abused women or children.

The Board of Directors of the Methodist Justice Ministry of First United Methodist Church, Fort Worth includes: Mr. Rickey Brantley (non-member of FUMC), Dr. John Crawford (member of FUMC), Judge David Evans (member), Mrs. Gaye Fuller (member), Mr. Mike Henry (member), Mrs. Charlotte Holliday (member), Mr. Davis Purcell (member and Chairperson of the  Board of Directors),  Dr. Richard Vigness (member), Justice Sue Walker (Non-member), and Dr. Tim Bruster (ex-officio member).

All the members of the Board are elected by the Annual Charge Conference of FUMC.  Only three of the nine voting members of the Board may be non-members of the Church. An Executive Committee of the Board must approve every lawsuit the MJM undertakes.

The Methodist Justice Ministry is self-funded, meaning that no funds from the First United Methodist Church budget go to support the Methodist Justice Ministry, although funds have been contributed directly to the Methodist Justice Ministry by members of the church.
